10 Questions to Jason Newsted by Voivod.net

Q1-Hi Jason, how and when did you originally meet Voivod?
Originally met VOIVOD in 1984. I think they must have been playing in Phoenix or Los Angeles or something like that. Could have been ’85 actually.

Q2–What is your favorite Voivod album?
The new one. My favorite ones from the catalog are Dimension Hatross and Nothingface.

Q3-Do you think quitting the band you were in before the biggest decision you’ve made in your life so far?
So far…yes.

Q4-What are your 10 favorite Desert Island Discs?
Bob Marley “Catch A Fire”
Black Sabbath “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”
Kyuss “Blues for the Red Sun”
Stevie Ray Vaughan “Couldn’t Stand the Weather”
Jimi Hendrix “Electric Ladyland”
Tom Waits “Swordfish Trombones”
Ziggy Marley “One Bright Day”
Metallica “Ride the Lightning”
Elvis Presley’s First Album
Curtis Mayfield “Superfly”
(in no particular order)

Q5-After being in one the biggest bands in rock’s history, is it hard to start all over again or is it more like a new beginning?
I’m not starting over again…I’m just continuing. A positive rebirth has occurred for me in the case of joining VOIVOD. It is a new beginning for all four of us…together.

Q6-What is the favorite album you’ve participated as a musician?
VOIVOD No. 13, with Garage Inc. running a close second.

Q7-What made you join Voivod?
I guess, over the years at different times, it was always a secret, true aspiration to be the bass player of VOIVOD. We’ve talked somewhat seriously about this actually happening since 1995 (ever since we created TARRAT). I also feel strongly about my hard-earned ability to bring some long deserved recognition to these brilliant musicians, whom I’ve looked up to since the early days of this music that the four of us helped to invent.

Q8-Are there any new bands whose recent work you admire?
-Puya (from Puerto Rico) are beautifully innovative and show amazing potential.
-Kyuss is the best heavy band of the last decade.
-Sepultura still wear the crown for growling music.
-Queens of the Stone Age are very listenable.

Q9-Give us a roundout of Jason’s top FOUR bass players
Geddy Lee
Geezer Butler
Lemmy
Flea
(in no particular order)

Q10-How long does Voivod plan on touring next year? Do you have any plans to travel overseas?
VOIVOD plans to follow up the March 2003 release of the new album with an extensive North American tour and, as always, our quest is to take the music to the people wherever the demand exists.

Thank you Jason for answering my questions.
