THE DISTILLERS – CORAL FANG (REPRISE RECORDS)
I admit it – I have a secret passion for female fronted Punk bands. The Muffs, Tilt, The Lunachicks … I love ‘em all. The Distillers are no exception, and I’ve been playing this album to death for some time now.
Sounding like a cross between Courtney Love and Kim Shattuck of the aforementioned Muffs, lead vocalist/guitarist Brody Dalle has the kind of gravelly yet gorgeous voice that has seen too many cigarettes and the bottom of Jack Daniels bottles - it’ll either appeal to you or it’ll bug the hell outta you. On first listen the songs seem like standard sing-along punk rock anthems, but give it a few spins and you’ll see a fine layer of silk interwoven between the angst and almost Gothic-like lyrics. ‘Dismantle me’, ‘The Gallow is God’, ‘Love is Paranoid’, ‘Hall of Mirrors’, this is simplistic yet spirit-soaring ear candy, my word, but Courtney Love wishes she could sound this good.

As I said, you’ll either love this or you won't...
