Scars – The Nether Hell
If you thought that thrash metal was on its way out, think again; Scars is a Brazilian metal band playing Bay Area type thrash in the vein of Vio-Lence or Defiance, with smidgens of Slayer thrown in for good measure. Hailing from Sao Paulo, Scars have been hitting the boards since 1991, recording their debut album ‘Ultimate Encore’ in ’94, playing tons of gigs in their home country alongside Kreator and Anthrax amongst others, before calling it a day in 1998.
Cut to 2004 and the lure of thrash was simply too much to ignore – the band get back together and record this, a 6-track EP of thrash metal scorchers which is bound to get them noticed beyond Brazil. Opener ‘Creatures That Come Alive in the Dark’ (teenagers?) rips and shreds, the production top-notch, the musicianship quite impressive. ‘Warfare’ is short and sweet, with WWII voice-overs added for dramatic effect. The title track is almost epic, with a death metal influence ala fellow Brazilian brothers Sepultura or Krisiun creeping in. ‘Legions (Forgotten by the Gods)’ stomps and starts, reminding this listener of the Slayer classic ‘At Dawn They Sleep’. ‘Return to the Killing Ground’ is typical Bay Area thrash, guitar solos aplenty ala Forbidden. And closer ‘Hidden Roots of Evil’ rips along, vocalist Regis F. screaming his lungs out as if his life depended on it. Riffs and more riffs aplenty, with a surprisingly prog mid-section, Goddamn, but this is good thrash metal!
This is one band I’d love to see live, and hopefully they’ll build on the strength of this powerful EP and get on the road soon.
