Interview with Blacky
During the last weeks, there have been several rumors
about the Canadian avantguarde metal band VOIVOD. We contacted
ex-bass player Jean-Yves Thériault (alias Blacky) to get
some info. Unfortunately, he was not very talkative. But it seems
as if a reunion of the original lineup won't happen...
What can you tell us about the rumors that
you and singer Denis Belanger (alias Snake) have re-joined Voivod?
Not much. You tell me.
On the www.Voivod.com message
board, fans are telling that there still is bad blood between
you and your former colleagues. Is this true?
No, the past is the past.
Have you been in contact with them during
the last 10
years?
Off and on. I went to a few of their shows, that's about it.
Why did you move back to Montreal from Vancouver?
Will you now be able to meet the guys more often?
Moving back to Montreal had nothing to do with Voivod. As I said,
I have no contact with them.
There are also rumors that Jason Newsted
(ex-Metallica) has joined the band. Your comment?
I can't comment on rumors.
Why did you leave the band in 1991 after
the "Angel
Rat" album?
It's all here: www.citeweb.net/voivod/Blacky-english.htm.
Whats your opinion of the bands
albums with Eric
Forest (bass / vocals)?
No opinion, I never really listened to any of those CDs.
Tell us more about your companies Vkool
and Xvoto.
Vkool Communications provides web design and hosting. Xvoto is
a recording label.
Michel Langevin (alias Away) has
always been the cover designer of Voivod. Now you are also a multimedia
specialist. How do you judge
Michaels efforts?
I wouldn't call myself a multimedia specialist. My girlfriend
does most of the design/ multimedia stuff, I handle the back-end
technical side of things for the most part. I'm not really up
on what Michel is doing these days, I couldn't comment on that.
What is Faux-Pas?
Faux Pas produces multimedia performance works using dance and
technology. It's about taking the piss out of high art.
Can you explain why your musical taste has
changed so radically?
It doesn't seem like it has changed radically to me. It has been
over ten years since I was in Voivod. People evolve with time.
"Evolution isn't a shame. Each member stays in the game..."
;-)
Are you interested at all in todays
metal scene?
Not really. Except maybe Cradle of Filth. www.theorderofthedragon.com
The "Her Ghost in the Fog" video is really great.
What are your plans for the near future?
These days I'm involved with my business, Vkool Communications,
and in developing artists for the Xvoto label, as well as producing
and composing for Faux Pas.
Thanks alot for the interview.
