Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal (Metal Blade)

First the cock, then the click, and as the boom blows an orange-shaped hole out from the back of your head you smile deliriously knowing you’ve just heard one of the most earth-shattering metal albums released in a long, long time. England’s death metal grindest returned at the end of last year with an album as heavy as Rambo’s bullet belt, shaking the wretched masses with bombastic anthems to their steel-capped boots.
Ok, I may be a tad over-stating the war rhetoric here, but this is Bolt Thrower, after all, and when Bolt Thrower fire on all cylinders as they do here, on their 8th studio album then, by gum, watch out. And with the return of fan-favorite vocalist Karl Willetts to the fold the band have been rejuvenated, as if some much needed R&R at Bolt Thrower HQ has geared the troops for their next world campaign.
Opener ‘At First Light’ is probably the best album opener you’ll hear on a metal album, period. Its brooding lyrics ordering soldiers ‘over the top’, foretelling the carnage to come, both literally and, here at least, musically. This is quickly followed by the howling of a klaxon before ‘Entrenched’ pummels the listener, this boasting a Slayer-esque solo that messers Kerry King or Jeff Hanneman would be proud to have penned. Third track in, and those familiar with Bolt Thrower’s past work will no doubt recognize the familiar, rumbling intro to ‘Cenotaph’, from the 1991 classic album ‘Warmaster’, something the band have continued with subsequent albums. A slow, stomping, menacing track, this gives way to other warheads, ‘Last Stand of Humanity’ to name but one, boasting a catchy riff of addictive proportions.
Beautifully produced by the band and Andy Falukner, ‘Those Once Loyal’ sounds HUGE and in-your-face, each instrument crystal clear and brimming in your speakers; we finally get to hear the throbbing bass of Jo Bench. This is destined to be a classic, folks. If you missed ‘Those Once Loyal’ on its initial release, do yourself a favor and march out and get this, by whatever means necessary.
