Nile – Annihilation of the Wicked (Relapse records)
The current state of death metal has never sounded better. Napalm Death are refreshed and rejuvenated, Poland seems to be cranking quality bands out hot on the heels of Vader, Behemoth and Decapitated, and the US boasts some of the crème de la crème in the scene today. By far the most respected and revered, Metal Egyptologists Nile return from the catacombs with a devastating album that, after two classics of the genre, 2000’s ‘Black Seeds of Vengeance’ and 2002’s ‘In their Darkened Shrines’ some thought they surely couldn’t master. Taking everyone by surprise, the Neil Kernon produced ‘Annihilation …’ simply shreds, and once more raises the bench in quality, quantity and fan-expectance for others to follow.
After an intro that Mrs. Bacteria13 ribbingly refers to as ‘bad plumbing’ (a traditional Egyptian musical instrumental) album opener ‘Cast Down the Heretic’ sets the groundwork for the audio carnage to come, and lays waste Biblical style to your speakers. It also boasts the ‘Freebird’ equivalent of a guitar solo – this thing shrieks and screams for ages – brilliant. ‘User-Maat-Re’, about that cad Ramsees II, slithers malevolently, whilst ‘Lashed to the Slave Stick’ fires with a memorable riff that will bounce around your skull long after you hear it. 'Annihiltion ...' also has one of the more longer tracks nile has ever recorded, the monumental 'Von Unassprechlichen Kulten', ticking in just under the 10-minute mark.
In typical Nile tradition, the CD contains detailed notes on each track, reading something of an academic history paper at times. Surrounding himself with long-time collaborator Dallas Toler-Wade and Greek drummer extraordinaire George Kollias, guitarist/main man Karl Sanders proves once again that not only is he an extremely talented musician but he is an intelligent, articulated metal head. Motley Crue this ain’t.
Death metal continues to both mutate and astound, and with Nile as prominent flag-bearers the scene has never felt more exciting. Prepare to be annihilated.
