Borrowing some stylistic ideas from his former band, Carcass, Swedish guitarist Michael Amott founded Arch Enemy with his brother Christopher.
After three astounding albums, the band lost their way after parting ways with vocalist Johan Liiva and decided to recruit unknown german vocalist Angela Gossow. Yes, she is a woman.
Angela's problem has always been the fact that she is a woman trying to do death metal vocals, which is not an easy task. Not having a deep voice, she has to resort to screeching, and most often than not, she sounds like a cat being run over by a car.
Think Chuck Schuldiner's (r.i.p) vocals, but screechier and higher pitched, if such thing is possible.
Definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
Doomsday Machine is Angela's third album with Arch Enemy, and easily the best. Despite having a very limited vocal style (she can't sing clean vocals) the singer she has found the right technique, and her voice sounds deeper.
Unlike the last two previous albums, the music and vocals are listeneable if not very interesting, and this time around the Ammott brothers have written some great riffs and songs sounding like their best album with Johan Liiva: Burning Bridges.
This is Death Metal of the highest instrumental caliber, with just the right combination of melody and brutal sound.
Definitely worth a listen. _________________ "I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder." -Werner Herzog |
