KARL SANDERS – SAURIAN MEDITATION (RELAPSE)

Those of you who know the death metal band Nile will no doubt recognize the name Karl Sanders. He is the guitarist and driving force from one of the world’s top and original extreme bands today. A passionate Egyptologist, anyone who owns Nile’s catalogue will be aware of the eastern instruments such as sitars and Baglama Saz’ to name but a few used to externalize their unique sound. Here Sanders plays all instruments himself, with guest appearances from both metal and non-metal musicians, most notably Davis Vincent and fellow Nile-ite Dallas Toler Wade.
It is difficult to recommend this to the average metal fan, as this is by no means (strictly speaking) a metal album. Case in point; Sanders describes each song on the CD, and here he gives the listener a detailed description of the first track, ‘Awaiting the Vultures’:

Quote:
‘Awaiting the Vultures’ is a fairly recent piece of music that started as a Baglama Saz riff/melody. It grew into a moody cinematic-style piece with the addition of some hypnotic ritual drumming, droning Emu synths, ambient flute effects, a bit of subliminal subterranean drumming that reminds me of a lion’s growl, and a variety of vocals by Mike (Breazeale). The chanting that Mike uses in this song is microtonal and utilizes a harmonic overtone technique wherein Mike is able to actually sing the fundamental plus two additional overtones besides the original note. The song is nothing overly complex, but I like the ambient mood it creates, and it was a lot of fun to record.'

So; if that sounds like your cup of tea, then you may very well lose yourself in the eastern richness on offer in this stunning and original (in the death metal world at least) album. Some may argue that it is just a CD's worth of soundbites from the film Midnight Express, but I would strongly disagree. Saurian Meditation is an idiosyncratic record that will sit quite comfortably alongside your Nile and movie soundtrack CDs. It is also an amazing album to get … busy with your other half – dim the lights, light some scented candles and press play … eastern promise indeed …
