MALEVOLENT CREATION – WARKULT (NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS)

Malevolent Creation are veterans of the US Death Metal scene and still going strong, on this, their 10th studio album. What you have here is no-frills, no-bullshit, out-and-out death metal with sprinkles of thrash thrown in for good measure. If Dark Angel had gone death than I’d dare say they sound like this.
In fact, the very Dark Angel ‘Dead March’ intro opens this album in threatening fashion, before storming into ‘Preemptive Strike’, and it’s away we go, heads down, race ya to the finish metal that these guys do so well. The musicianship is well above par for your average DM band; the drumming of octopus Dave Culross has to be heard to be believed, and the snarling vocals of Kyle Symons suits the ferocious music to a tee. All songs are, naturally, war-related – ‘Ravaged by Conflict’, ‘On Grounds of Battle’ - as if you couldn’t tell by looking down the enormous gun of what appears to be a panzer tank on the album’s cover. And they also give us a competent version of 'Jack the Ripper' from cult Aussie Metal band Hobb’s Angel of Death.
Granted, this is not for everyone, you either like this vicious type of death metal or you don’t. In my opinion Malevolent Creation is one of the hardest working bands in the scene today and, if you’ll forgive the pun, presently firing on all cylinders.
