NASTY SAVAGE – PSYCHO PSYCHO (CROOK RECORDS)
Anyone remember Nasty Savage? They were probably the 1980’s thrash metal best kept secret, for, even though they released some classic albums and played at the famous World War III festival (alongside Voivod, Possessed, Destruction and Celtic Frost) they never really broke out of their cult status. Nasty Ronnie was a formidable front-man, built like a WWF wrestler, he had a gravely voice who could scream like someone who got his testicles caught in a vice. The musicianship was certainly above-par, they playing technical epics that perhaps went over the average metal fans head at the time.
Well, someone was listening when they said Nasty-Savage-Reunion, for not only did NS reform with their original line-up but they recorded an album (hot on the heels of last year’s Wages of Sin EP) that could very well have been recorded in the 80’s. Psycho … sounds so Nasty Savage that you would swear that they had never gone away. I’m deadly serious, this record sounds and feels like the Penetration Point sessions, their last full-length album, released in 1989.
Some would say ‘where’s the point?’, for a band to develop and move forward they must change and progress. Maybe, but I maintain that Nasty Savage songs are so refreshingly progressive that, much like a thrash metal Dream Theatre, their songs will be original and inspiring for many years to come.
