...YOU ARE CONNECTED...
Killing Technology, the third excursion into hyperspace, as spawned by this mighty entity called VOIVOD.
A giant step forward after two chaotic, but very satisfying thrash records, this record clearly shows the signs of a band really developping their very own style. Mind you, the year was only 1987. Metal these days was ought to be raw, primitive and direct. The progressive leanings displayed on this record were hard to swallow for ye average thrasher just wanting to have a good time while freaking out to Slayer, Possessed or one of the countless other illuminati from that period.
The onslaught kicks off with the epic title track which immediately sets the mood for some serious case of mindblowing. Thundering drums by Away and blowing bass by Blacky support Piggy's crushing, disharmonic guitar dimemberment while tortured vocals courtesy of Snake scream lyrics about a bleak future that seams all too realistic right now.
'Overreaction' and 'Tornado' continues this raging journey into unchartered realms of subconscious (thrashing) rage, leaving the listener KO for a while.
He, who may be prepared for some more mindblowing, continues with side B. Kicking off with 'Forgotten in Space', a song that makes you feel what it's like to be trapped in a vacuum yourselves. Cold, dark and inhuman. 'Ravenous Medicine' and 'Order of the Blackguards' are songs which sarcasticly point at some diseases existing in society TODAY. No compromise again here, just total mayhem.
The story finally ends with 'This is not an Exercise' (one of my all-time VV-favs by the way), another epic track of brooding insanity at apocalyptic scale making this the perfect closer for this musical equivalent of pure armageddon.
Well, the productional and musical values of 'KT' may not be the most perfect they ever did, but the sheer power and inventiveness of this record makes this a classic in itselves.
CHEERS!

KILLING TECHNOLOGY:Fuck yeah,Voivod is forming! This album is where a transission takes place. You begin to hear the Voivod sound, the intricate beats and riffage, come into play. Now the guitars are spiced up with Piggy's awesome use of effects. The thrash format is slowly fading into a more technical aproach. The drums get EVEN BETTER, variying thrash beats with metal and power metal beats. Snake's vocal are getting better too. On this one, he experiments more and slowly forms the distinct Voivod voice which becomes a trademark for their sound later! My favs are "Killing Technologies", and "Forgotted in Space". This album is great!

Tiens-donc !!!
Lueur de talent à l'horizon !!!
Killing Technology : superbe
Overreaction : voilà du solide comme on l'aime
Forgotten in Space : du progressif de qualité
Tornado : renversante !!!
7/10 |

Killing Technology is the record when Voivod started to become Voivod imo. If you compare Rooaaarrr with KT its a tremendous difference in songwriting, performance and production. KT is a very good record but I think they got even better on Dimension Hatröss.
Highlights: Killing Tech, Tornado, Forgotten in space, Ravenous Medicine. |
