DIABOLIC – EXCISIONS OF EXORCISMS
(Deathgasm Records)
It is wildly accepted that Morbid Angel is one of the forefathers of death metal, and like all founders and originators there will be imitators; Florida’s Diabolic, for one. They make no bones about it, either - swirling solos, bombastic blast beats and guttural vocals … this is pure Altars of Madness worship.
Having a somewhat troubled past with more than enough line-up changes than you can shake a drum stick at Diabolic is back, firing on all cylinders with a (hopefully) stable outfit that will take their brand of speed/death metal to the four corners of the globe. New album Excisions of Exorcism, brilliantly produced by the band and Juan ‘Punchy’ Gonzalez builds on the two EP’s Possessed by Death & Chaos in Hell (recorded to generate label interest) from 2006/7 and is one of the more blistering extreme metal releases this year.
The opening title track is simply stunning, boasting jaw-dropping solos and one of the tightest rhythm sections around. Music like this shouldn’t be this precise, but it is - witness Venomous Habitations, leaping straight into the fray with nay a warning, or the slithering False Belief that oozes Where the Slime Lives from Morbid Angel’s Domination album. Fragmented Kreation boasts brutally heavy, memorable riffs, whilst Entombed zips by in chaotic fury.
This is no-frills, heads-down-see-you-at-the-finish death metal, and it should keep death-heads happy until that new, long over-due Morbid Angel album sees the light of day (eventually).
