SLAYER – WORLD PAINTED BLOOD

(American Recordings)

After the rabid reception for Psycopathy Red – released on-line to coincide with Metallica’s Death Magnetic, trivia fans - the hype was on for Slayer to deliver with their new album. 2006’s Christ Illusion was a return to form (of sorts) or at least a return to the original line-up with Dave Lombardo firmly back on the drumming stool. Personally, I didn’t rate the album when it was first released, but music is like that; hate it one day, love it the next. CI may not be their best record to date but it’s a damn fine Slayer album.

As for WPB … yes, it delivers, and in spades, too. Yet, typically for Slayer it contains some amazing tracks, some mediocre ‘uns and some not-so good songs – an unfortunate, reoccurring series of events for 21st century Slayer. Thankfully, the better tracks far out-weigh the poorer ones; album highlight Public Display of Dismemberment is probably the most Slayer Slayer has recorded in years.

Musically this sounds a cross between Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss; producer Greg Fidelman has captured that ‘classic’ Slayer sound, and consequently the band sound all the more vicious because of it. At times the listener can place certain songs off WPB onto the band’s back catalogue. Unit 731 for example (WWII Japanese doctors’ ala Josef Mengele) would fit nicely between Piece by Piece and Necrophobic. I love the punk-ish Snuff, not to mention the opening guitar solos. That said, I’m not fond of Human Strain or Playing with Dolls, but everyone will have their favourites and their not-so.

Bottom line, this is a great Slayer album. With the metal media wondering aloud how long Slayer can keep up this pace of album/tour - the band, nor the fans don't particularly want to see old men on stage attempting to play Chemical Warfare - perhaps the next (and final?) Slayer record will be a fantastic album ...
