Most people have heard of Queens of the Stone Age, but have never heard of Fu Manchu..
Fu Manchu have been around for almost a decade, and are basically the quintessential California retro stoner / rock / metal band.
Unfortunately, unlike better known bands of the genre like the aforementioned QOTSA and Monster Magnet, FuManchu do not quite have the songwriting skills to make the jump from cult underground band to million selling act (probably because of their singer's limited vocal range and singing style), but they do have great chops and sound, and in their tenth (!) album We Must Obey they safely stick to what they do best: merging post Sabbath riffs with sounds of other stoner rock innovators like Kyuss and even UK's Cathedral.
These guys may not be particularly original, but the do provide with a fun set of rocking heavy songs that should please any stoner and retro rock metal fanatic.
Note to Voivod Fans: Fu Manchu's former guitarist Eddie Glass and former drummer Ruben Romano left the band before the last album The Action is Go was recorded to form Nebula, the band where Michel Langevin occasionally plays drums. _________________ "I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder." -Werner Herzog |
