(2005) Trivium - Ascendancy
Since the rise of Metalcore, the Roadrunner label lost no time in enlisting the services of Shadows Fall clones Trivium, hyping them as the "next Metallica"..
So, does being the "next Metallica" mean that Trivium are going to sellout after a few albums, hire a midget Danish drummer and sue their own fans using Napster?
All joking aside, to the untrained ear, Trivium sound virtually indistinguishable from Shadows Fall, with all the Metalcore elements carefully in place: squeaky clean production work, great drumming and guitar playing, melodic choruses and a mixture of metal subgenres that will leave any old time metal head confused..
These guys have technical skills that metal bands 20 years ago would have killed for, specially considering they are so young, but careful listening reveals that there is little behind the high gloss production job and hype.
Any metalhead old enough to remember Death Angel knows how that band got signed right out of high school and disintegrated only after three albums, despite all the hype about their youthful talent...
Trivium's "songs" are basically a collection of diverse metal and thrash riffs set to melodic singing mixed with hardcore vocals.
I guess Roadrunner's marketing dept. forgot that Metallica (once upon a time) wrote some great songs, that are good enough for a cello quartet to cover.
Trivium have not quite reached that mark yet, and probably never will. _________________ "I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder." -Werner Herzog

I watched a Trivium feature in FUSE's metal program on cable TV. The frontman / singer / guitar player comes across as a self-conscious, obnoxious guy who is more concerned in becoming the next Greedtallica than with the music he is playing.
Trivium are not, and never will be the next Metallica because:
1-When Metallica started, they didn't set out to become the next big thing or the next "Black Sabbath".. they were just doing their own thing regardless of whether they failed or not.
2-Back in 1982, Metallica were creating original music that sounded like nobody elses'.
Trivium are not only far from being original, they are one of the zillion indistinguishable metalcore bands signed to major labels, who are not even one of the top three bands in their metal sub-genre.
I can think of other three metalcore bands that are vastly superior in songwriting and musicianship skills to Trivium: God Forbid, Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage.
3-Metallica were truly underground: They didn't rely on TV, or radio airplay like Trivium. Metallica were not writing radio friendly songs with cheesy sing-along breakdowns like Trivium.
There is a band that already changed and reinvented the face of metal music for better or for worse and has for all intents and purposes become the next Metallica: Korn.
Anyone who purposedly sets out to be the next "Metallica", the next "Black Sabbath" or the next "Korn" will end up as second rate wannabes, like Trivium. _________________ "I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder." -Werner Herzog |
