EVERY SNAKE IS SLEEPING – s/t
Hailing from Holland, this hardcore five-piece have bashed out a demo that isn’t strictly heads-down, in your face Earth Crisis. There is subtlety in abundance here whilst still maintaining the middle-finger angst of hardcore.
This 3-track CD is wonderfully produced, and is full of riffs normally associated with technical death metal bands than your Quicksands or Fugazis. Opener ‘Pistols at Dawn’ seems straight-up hardcore, until an almost Pink Floyd interlude leaves you wondering just what the hell you’re listening to. Second track, the assertive ‘Atlantis’, stops and starts at breakneck speed, whilst ‘Werewolves’ dazzles with its aggressiveness, before taking its foot off the accelerator with an almost Neurosis-like thundering climax. Fantastic.
The rule goes like this: Metalheads hate Hardcore, Hardcore people hate Metal, and never the twain shall meet. However, with bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis and now Every Snake is Sleeping breaking musical boundaries, surely there is room for negotiation?
