USURPER – CRYPTOBEAST (EARACHE RECORDS)
US deathsters Usurper have been hammering out their brand of no-frills death & thrash metal since 1992. This, their fifth studio album, continues where 2003’s Twilight Dominion left off – manic riffs the size of the Giant in Jack & the Beanstalk and more metal than all the sunken U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean combined.
If Manowar are self-proclaimed saviors of ‘true heavy metal’, than Usurper are pretenders to the throne. Both bands take themselves very seriously indeed, in fact, track three on this release is a little ditty called ‘Kill for Metal’. High schools of America – you have been warned.
For those who’ve never heard Usurper, think early Celtic Frost circa Morbid Tales jamming with latter-day Exodus and you’re pretty much there. There’s an immensely heavy rhythm section here, some tasty guitar solos abound with non-too growly vocals care of one Dan Tyrantor and an excellent production from Neil Kernon, making this metal as metal can be, folks. One listen of the storming ‘Return of the Werewolf’ will have the blood pumping in your veins, and that's just one of 10 monstrous tracks.
No pretence, no gimmicks, no bullshit, Usurper are spiked armbands, sleeveless t-shirts, tattoos, long hair and Tom Warrior death grunts. Don't take my word for it, though. From the aforementioned 'Kill for Metal':
On a mission of vengeance
In the name of Metal
Drinking, thrashing, slaying
For the glory of Metal.
This sounds like your daily routine then 'Cryptobeast' is for you.
