MOTORHEAD – INFERNO (SPV RECORDS)
Motorhead are one of those infuriating bands that can either release ok albums, good albums, or really good albums. Thankfully 2004 sees Motorhead return to form with Inferno, perhaps the best record they’ve released in a long time. In fact, I’d even go so far as to compare Inferno with the forgotten 1983 classic Another Perfect Day, ‘cos it a serious amount of lead guitar, something Lemmy tends to sneer at. Regular Motor-guitarist Philip Campbell shares the spotlight with the talented Steve Vai, who plays some cracking solos on two of the tracks on offer here. The songs are pretty damn heavy too, thanks mainly to Lemmy’s bass that throbs dangerously within the mix. When he says “Turn the bass up, will ya?” on the thrash-along Fight you just know that he means business.
Most of the tracks here are winners, from the bouncing opener Terminal Show, Killers, Life’s a Bitch, In the Year of the Wolf, and the punkish Smiling like a Killer. They do lose points for the out-of-place Whorehouse Blues, which ends this invigorating album on such a low note, but this is a minor gripe.
Inferno is Heavy Metal at its best, and has empowered a rejuvenated Motorhead who, going by this, show no sign of retiring just yet.
